More on EliteXC/CBS

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Variety is reporting the broadcast deal between EliteXC and CBS, making it about as official as it can be, short of a press release from one of the two companies. Oh wait, there’s one of those, too.

The CBS Television Network and ProElite, Inc., a Los Angeles-based leading entertainment and media company that produces world class mixed martial arts (MMA) events, today jointly announced a multi-year agreement that will bring one of the fastest growing spectator sports to a major broadcast television network for the first time.

‘Major announcement’ from UFC later today.

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

From UFC. com:

UFC® President Dana White will be making a major announcement at the UFC® 82 PRIDE OF A CHAMPION pre-fight press conference in Columbus, Ohio.
UFC.COM will feature the official announcement at 1pm EST. Look for video highlights of the press conference featuring Dana White, along with a special guest, making the announcement later in the day.

This could be interesting. Is the UFC coming to Madison Square Garden? Have they signed Rufus from bumfights? Has Couture finally realized that he has no right to deny Nogueira a fight? Is the Undertaker going to triangle choke some fools into submission? I’m a bit curious.

There are rumors that the UFC may have found another TV home in FOX and that a sponsor worth mentioning has joined the fight.

EliteXC and CBS reach deal to bring MMA to network TV.

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

While the rumors had UFC and CBS teaming up to bring MMA to the masses, in the end, it was EliteXC that landed the deal, according to mmajunkie.com.  Technically, IFL was the first MMA promotion to make it to network TV, but EliteXC appears poised to be the first to make it to the broadcast big leagues. So, how did the relative newcomer beat out the UFC juggernaut?

Terminator 4: Live Free or Terminate Hard

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Warner Bros. has set an official release date for the fourth Terminator film, the first of a planned three part trilogy. May 22, 2009 will find me in theaters, watching a movie that will destroy my dreams or rescue me from my nightmares.

My mixed feelings stem from the fact that Christian Bale is starring as John Connor, but McG is running the show. I’ve been a fan of Bale’s since American Psycho (what does that say about me?) and his roles in ‘The Machinist,’ ‘Rescue Dawn,’ ‘Harsh Times,’ ‘Equilibrium,’ ‘Batman Begins,’ etc. have shown that no role is wrong for him. As for McG, the only film of his I’ve seen is ‘Charlie’s Angels,’ which wasn’t exactly one of my favorite experiences. It wasn’t horrible, but it’s not something I would like to make a habit of. I would compare it to eating cabbage.

SNL’s ‘I Drink Your Milkshake’ starring Daniel Plainview.

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Here’s the ‘I Drink Your Milkshake’ sketch from the return episode of SNL this weekend. If you missed it, it’s Daniel Plainview from ‘There Will Be Blood”s new Food Network show where he uses angle strawing to drink other people’s milkshakes. Bill Hader’s got the whole impression thing down.

No matter how you look at it, there doesn’t seem to be a point to Vantage Point.

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Well, I finally saw ‘Vantage Point’ (my second rewind themed movie of the week!), tonight. I’d say it’s worth seeing for its narrative gimmick, but there’s almost literally nothing else there. The review is spoiler free, although I can’t promise it won’t spoil the movie for you.

If you’re looking for characters with any kind of backstory or motivation, nothing to see here. If you’re looking for a rhyme or reason to the narrative, keep on truckin. If you’re looking for deep, meaningful performances (to be fair, I don’t know how many different ways you can say
‘Oh, my God!’ or ‘Where’s my brother?’), sorry, wrong movie. If you’re looking for a more than serviceable score, you won’t hear it here. If you’re looking to gain a deeperinsight into the causes and effects of America’s foreign policy or that of global terrorism, again, keep looking. None of that will be found in Vantage Point.
